Fixing of reinforcement (steel) which covers the ground beams incorporated into the raft foundation, increasing the strength of the foundation.
Concrete slabs are built on the building site using formwork - a type of boxing into which the wet concrete is poured. The slab is to be reinforced with rebars.
Relatively rigid walls used for supporting the soil mass laterally so that the soil can be retained at different levels on the two sides.
About Master Raft
Master Raft is a well established Reinforced Concrete Raft Foundation company, founded by Ben Steenkamp in 2006.
Since we opened for business in 2006, our company has gone from strength to strength.
Encouraging us to expand our services by implementing Civil Engineering and Soil Mattressing (Civil Groundworks).
Our Services:
- Civil Ground works
We do Civil Ground works, which is the preparation of the soil mattress created
by using large amounts of G5 compacted together to form the base of the Raft Foundation.
''Geotechnical engineering is an area of civil engineering concerned with the rock and soil
that civil engineering systems are supported by. Knowledge from the fields of geology,
material science and testing, mechanics, and hydraulics are applied by
geotechnical engineers to safely and economically design foundations,
retaining walls, and similar structures.
- Reinforced Concrete Raft Foundations
What is a Raft?
Reinforced Concrete Raft foundations are used to distribute heavy column and wall loads across the entire building area,
to lower the contact pressure compared to conventional spread footings. Reinforced Concrete Raft foundations can be constructed
near the ground surface, or at the bottom of basements. In high-rise buildings, Reinforced Concrete Raft foundations
can be several meters thick, with extensive reinforcing to insure relatively uniform load transfer.
Raft Foundations is mainly used for different soil conditions on specific areas.
The soil conditions include:
- Clay (Heaving Soils)
- Sand (Collapsible Soils)
- Sinkholes (Dolomite Soils)
By choosing to do a Master Raft, Raft Foundation
on these specific soil conditions will increase its strength,
stability and flexibility, giving you best results the first time round.
- Slabs and Designs
More about Concrete Slabs:
A concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings.
Horizontal slabs of steel reinforced concrete, typically between 10 and 50 centimetres thick,
are most often used to construct floors and ceilings, while thinner slabs are also used for exterior paving.
In many domestic and industrial buildings a thick concrete slab, supported on foundations or directly on the subsoil,
is used to construct the ground floor of a building. In high rise buildings and skyscrapers, thinner, pre-cast concrete slabs
are slung between the steel frames to form the floors and ceilings on each level.
On the technical drawings, reinforced concrete slabs are often abbreviated to "r.c.slab" or simply "r.c.".

More about the Design of a Concrete Slab:
For a suspended slab, there are a number of designs to improve the strength-to-weight ratio.
In all cases the top surface remains flat, and the underside is modulated:
Corrugated, usually where the concrete is poured into a corrugated steel tray.
This improves strength and prevents theslab bending under its own weight.
The corrugations run across the short dimension, from side to side.
A ribbed slab, giving considerable extra strength on one direction.
A waffle slab, giving added strength in both directions.
